Helping Your Teen with their Confidence
Confidence is an important quality for all of us if we want to go through life happy and successful. It’s especially important for teenagers who are experiencing big changes and facing difficult challenges, both at school and in their personal lives. A private sixth form in Hertfordshire offer the following information for parents who hope to encourage their child to be more confident.
First and foremost, be sure to praise your teen for their efforts and try to make them feel good about themselves where possible. For example, if they don’t do as well as they had hoped in their exams, reward their efforts nonetheless so that they don’t feel disheartened. Try not to put too much pressure on them when it comes to things like grades and university because that will just make them feel overwhelmed. Instead, make sure they know that you’re proud of how hard they’re trying.
Try and let them stand on their own two feet as much as possible rather than racing to their rescue. If you’re always there to pick them up when they fall, they’ll never develop the confidence to attempt things on their own. This could apply to any aspect of life, including things like their coursework at school. Independence and confidence are closely tied in many ways. When they do happen to make mistakes just let them learn from it and move on.
Help your teenager by exposing them to new experiences and responsibilities and encourage them to try different things. This could be anything from starting a new hobby to visiting a new town. Increased exposure to different experience teaches teens how to deal with things and become accustomed to ‘newness’ so that they don’t become frightened to try something different.
You need to teach your teen to have a healthy balance between accepting who they are and improving who they are. There is always room for improvement, but that doesn’t mean your son or daughter should wallow in self-pity. They need to appreciate their good points whilst working hard to fix the not so good.
