F is for Fan Fiction and Fandoms.

The internet has to be my favorite place, I have a future A to Z post talking about it but today I wanted to cover one of the reasons why the internet has a place in my heart

FanFiction and Fandoms –

Back in 1997 when I first started using the internet, I didn’t know what fandoms or fan communities was, I was watching at the time Star Trek and I wanted to know more about the world of Trek, so I had this awesome CD ROM encyclopedia about the universe of Trek but like anything, I wanted to learn more and I used the school computers to sit and read about everything I could find..

Around 2000, I learnt of the Harry Potter fandom, which was the first time I really opened up and read fan written stories, this whole new world was created and my friends online and I made up stories of us in Hogwarts based on conversations we all had on MSN Messenger, whats rather sad is there isn’t many of these websites left to look back on and re-read all these awesome stories other people created, the only one still knocking around is Fanfiction.net which I remember having a big purge of RPF (Real Person Fiction) and removed many fan written stupid stories of their favorite actors.. it sounds horrid but honestly some are bloody funny, I used to read some fun U2 ones, nothing sexual.. just a caricature of their own personalities re-imagined by fans.

U2 had their own website in the end which has also ended up dying along with all the countless fansites.. things really do not last long on the internet..

Roughly around 2006, I discovered the wonderful world of Top Gear and the amount of people who loved the boys.. and I started using Livejournal again, finding many communities and I also found a RPF community.. full of stupid stories and the occasional… rude one.. but it was so nice to read these imaginative tales, some completely bonkers..

Fandoms are a funny thing, you will meet the crazy and then you will meet some of the best friends you’ll ever meet, like minded people and many many talented artists and writers..

I almost wish people wouldn’t criticize fan fiction or fan art and their creators.. yes you are going to find the odd crazy person, insisting that a certain character must like someone else even if its completely against canon (not true to character) but a lot of us are just like everyone else..

just a tiny bit passionate about their favorite subject..

The truth is out there..

Geek Gear World of Wizardry Box – July Roundup.

This months Geek Gear box came at me as a bit of a surprise, I didn’t expect it, so when it turned up at my door I was super excited, in the box each month you will get fun items depending on what fandom you choose when signing up, and obviously I picked Harry Potter and the surrounding world of wizardry.

This lovely little print, which like the others I have gotten from the box now sits in my children’s bedrooms, is from the recent movie Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, which I have yet to see for myself.. I know how could I not see it yet! but I am aware of the characters etc.. I have said before that many of the prints are fan made and honestly I hope they are paid for their contributions..

img_3400

This month we had two prop items, I will get to the second prop shortly but the first prop is of course the world famous glasses worn by Harry himself, these are surprisingly heavy so aren’t a cheap item, they’re a bit on the small side, or my head is on the large size, either way I think they’re pretty cool and ready for when its Halloween and dress up time 🙂

img_3399

The house item this month is this funky little clip on bow, it has a safety pin at the back so you can attack it to bags and even onto a thick hair tie, I have put mine onto my changing bag so it comes with me everywhere.. gotta rock the house pride!

img_3398

As you can see from the photo, this is a large coin which is made to look like the opening of the Chamber of Secrets, its pretty heavy and a cool collectors item, not much I can really say on it really, its just a pretty cool ‘thing’ to put on display.

I also got another enamel pin to go with the Hagrid one from last month, This one is a Harry Potter one, Similar to the one last month you could collect three different colors, a basic one, a silver one and a gold one, I just had a basic one but I don’t mind, they’re pretty cool and Harry now sits next to Hagrid on my bag.

I think my favorite thing about the geek gear box is the t-shirts, when you are selecting the box you can choose sizes so no worries about if you get something to small, and if you get something large then you have a new shirt to wear to bed! This one is once again from the Fantastic Beast film, with the little pocket of Newt Scamander on the breast.

and finally the second prop item, a wand! I got a wand in a past box, it was Hermione’s wand and it was brilliant, I allowed my daughter to play with it as she loves the character, this wand was an bog standard one, didn’t have a character placed with it so it will be fun during role playing when they want to mess about pretending to be wizards.. it has a pretty good weight to it, which gives the feel of a real wand.. and its really well made!

There we have it, July’s monthly geek gear box! always full of fun items to play with and wear, I think out of all the cool boxes I’ve tried I like this one the most, while makeup and baby stuff is cool,  I am such a nerd at heart and I love being able to share my enjoyment of my nerdiness with you. 🙂

Until next time

20 Years of Harry Potter

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone is a full 20 years old..

Its actually hard to believe that 20 years ago children and adults all around the world jumped into the amazing and incredible story of the boy who lived, and now we have wonderful movies, stage shows and countless stunning art well written fan-fictions and millions of fans, I don’t think J.K Rowling expected that her little novel would become so loved around the world by almost everyone who read it.

While I wasn’t there at the start, I certainly remember people talking about it and the gossip of the films and or who would play who, I jumped into the wagon of Potter just after Goblet of Fire was released and very quickly read through the first three books over a weekend at my dads house before reading the fourth the following weekend, I had tried to listen to the audio-books read by Stephen Fry but I had to read the books..

I remember when movie one was released and going to it with glee with a good friend of mine at the time, it was exciting and amazing to see these characters we only imagined come to life on the screen in front of us, many of who we all imagined would play this character or that character, and obviously watching with nerves at the brand new stars taking on the trio..

Eight films later, its hard to imagine anyone else to play Harry but Daniel Radcliffe and who could ever take over the role of Professor Snape but Alan Rickman, and I now sit down with my children and let them watch the films and one day when they get a bit older I will hand over my well read, much loved books to them so they can enjoy the full story behind the boy who lived, the books that helped their mum deal with college and over come certain things from her past, and one day they will share the books to their own children

I feel old, knowing that this book, the book i saw launch is now 20 years old, but the story itself will continue being read by new eyes and new fans enter the world of Harry Potter like I did all those years ago.
